A baseball game was played on the College grounds, on Tuesday afternoon, between the Town and College Clubs, which resulted in a victory for the Town team by a score of 13 to 15.

At the opening of school baseball was the first game taken up, and practises were held every evening. There was a constant improvement in the playing of the team, and it was thought that they were in sufficiently good form to play a match, accordingly the Derby Centre Academy team was challenged. Considerable confidence was shown by the home team and the remark, "We wont do a thing to them," was frequently heard. Well, we didn't. We were beaten by a score of - well never mind just what, for it is already a matter of ancient history, to the players at least. Still there was no dishonor in such a defeat for the College boys behaved like gentlemen. The Derby Centre team was composed, not of Derby Academy students, but of men from the surrounding villages, only four or five being actual students. A return match was expected on the following Saturday but it failed to materialize, and will probably not be played this season on account of the cold weather. The ball and bat will now have a rest until spring.

We have just entered upon the baseball season of '99. It was thought for a while that cricket would be substituted for baseball, and in fact some are negotiating for it now; but it does not seem to be as popular. The College has a strong "nine" this year, and it is thought that it would have been well to have accepted the challenge from Bishop's. However, in some way or other it was thought best not to play them.
It is understood that the Newport Academy boys have organized a team, and are on the lookout for matches. The College should have as much baseball as time will allow.
