I am not going to lie - my expectations were low going into this season. We had only three returning curlers and eight students who were completely new to the sport. Nevertheless, we started the season off with multiple solid games, including wins over both BCS and Richmond. Our team was built around a core group of veterans: Annie Tang, Ivy Hu and Matt Campbell. These experienced curlers worked with the rookies to elevate the skill level of the group. Everyone was eager to learn and wanted to Improve. In the playoffs, we lost to Richmond by an inch in an extra-end in the first round but defeated MVR to win bronze. We hope the team had as much fun as we did and are very proud of their accomplishments.

Curling team slides into first place
On the first day of practice, the Stanstead Curling team consisted of only three returning players. Of which, only two had played competitively the previous season. Our chances of success against much larger schools seemed grim, but Mr. Planetta, the head curling coach, was not ready to bow down without a fight. After a few days, a record number of wipeouts by Korey Goudreau and Laura Tang, and individual support, (almost) every curler had developed the skills to throw with correct form.
In our lineup, Roy Lyu, Thomas Liao, Annie Tang, Matthew Campbell, and Ivy Hu had relatively low levels of experience when compared to other schools. We had feared our first match against BCS for weeks before we encountered it. Nonetheless, we practiced every day and it paid off: on November 30, the team played BCS where we won 14-1, a surprise to all. Soon after, on December 5, we played the strongest team in the league, Galt. The team fought hard, but fell behind in the last end, losing 6-4. Our discouragement turned into motivation to practice every strategy which we hadn’t perfected yet. On December 10, we played against Richmond Regional, winning 8- 3 with special thanks to Ivy Hu’s precision, skill, and leadership.
Mr. Planetta and Mr. Lyew are pleased with the team’s hard work, as they have earned 1st Place in the ETIAC Curling League with the highest ratio of points for vs. points against the team. The coaches and players have high expectations for the team’s skills to improve and we are confident that we will refine our skills to beat Galt in our next match following December Break.

Athlete of the week: Matthew Campbell
Throwing third for the Stanstead College curling team, Matthew Campbell, a grade 11 student from Enosburg Fall, Vermont, has been a major contributor to his team’s success not only this past week but all season long.
During games, he is calm, cool and collected, and during practices he is a consistently positive influence on his teammates, many of whom are new to curling.
A true lover of his sport, showed uncommon dedication by refusing to miss a minute of action despite having knee surgery over the holidays. It was supposed to be a rebuilding year this year, but thanks in large part to Matthew’s leadership and commitment, your Spartans are fighting for first place in the ETIAC and enjoying their most successful season ever.
Congratulations, Matthew, for being named this week’s Athlete Of The Week!
