(From the Stanstead College yearbook)
We started the season with 4 girls and 14 boys, 5 of whom were returning players. We welcomed new students who had different levels of skills in racket sports although squash was new to them.
This year, our top players participated in three competitions against BCS and in one provincial tournament in which some of the best players in the province were participating. Our players were: Philippe Martel and Matthew Liddell who managed to be our best male players: Gregoire Malbezin, a former tennis player who quickly learned the nuts and bolts of squash, and Eric Wang, Patrick Young and Patricio Tamayo who not only became fierce competitors but also demonstrated good team spirit during the whole season.
That said, the squash team is more than a group of selected people participating in tournaments. It also includes a larger group of recreational players who are involved on a daily basis. We remember Fritz Dietrich and Chiron Scheidegger and their quiet personality esteemed by the whole team, Marie Yoshizawa and Arisa Shimada who spent as much time on the courts as they did in the weight room working hard. Fernanda Rivas' and Valentina Gaudry's laughters that gave spirit to our practices. The same can be said about Antonio Dichi and Fernando Cano who were loud fellows on and off the court. We also remember Jacky and Joel Xu who got along as if they were twin brothers, Marc Antoine Mailhot who was smiling, most of the time, and Angel Papadopoulos who was very serious all of the time.
Sincerely, I would very much like to thank and commend you all. We had a good season together. Mister Blais and I enjoyed the time being your coaches.

Squash VS BCS update
The Squash team had its first meeting on December 5 against BCS.
Five students were representing our school, three of which were rookies on the team. Our players fiercely battled in the 10 matches they played on that day. We had to wait for the last match to determine a winner. We finally came short with a 4-6 lost.
Honorable mention to Philippe Martel, Eric Wang, Matthew Liddell and rookie Patricio Tamayo for winning one of their matches.
Our next meeting against BCS will happen in January.

Athlete of the week: Matthew Liddell-Grainger
Stanstead College is proud to recognize Matthew Liddell-Grainger from the squash team as this week’s Athlete Of The Week. At this past Sunday’s provincial tournament.
Matthew not only earned a bronze medal for his stellar performance, but in true Spartan fashion he demonstrated humility and sportsmanship in the face of a superior opponent.
Throughout the tournament, despite the eventual champion being an 11-year old prodigy, “LG” left his ego at the door and showed both admiration and respect for his rival, in the process establishing a camaraderie rarely seen amongst competitors.
Skilled, humble and a true lover of squash with a bright future (he’s only in Grade 9!), Matthew Liddell-Grainger of Hemmingford, Que. earns this week’s AOTW – congratulations!
