We started the season with 1 girl and 17 boys, 4 of who were returning players. We welcomed new students who had different levels of skills in racket sports, although squash was new to them.
Our top players participated in four competitions against BCS and in one provincial tournament. These players were: Matthew Liddell, who managed to be our best player; Diego Riveroll, a quick and very smart learner; Emilio Acuna, a player with lots of grit and a great passion for the game; Mika Olivier; a terminator with a devastating drive shot; Patricio Gutierrez, a complete athlete who likes squash almost as much as watching the volleyball girls practicing their drills; and Jacky Chan, now a veteran with good skills. Last but not the least, we had Crystal Lin, the only girl on the team, a quiet presence who showed lots of patience with the boys and was really a pleasure to coach.
That said, the squash team is more than a group of selected people participating in tournaments. It also includes a larger group of recreational players. I would very much like to thank and commend all the players. We had a great season together. Miss Hamilton and I enjoyed the time being your coaches. You were a loud group, not always easy to manage, but, in the end, you brought a lot of spirit to our practice.

Squash: Strong first outing vs BCS
On December 4, our squash team had their first meeting against BCS on the Stanstead courts. With six players involved (including 3 rookie players), we managed to be a strong opposition until the very last game.
We tied in the number of matches won on both sides (6-6), tied on the number of games (14-14). In the very end, the number of points determined the winner: SC 244 and BCS 262.
Congratulations to all the participants, especially Diego Riverol and Jacky Xu who won all of their matches. Our next meeting is planned after December break and our players are looking forward to take their revenge!
Also participating in this meet: Cristal Lin, Mika Olivieri, Emilio Acuna and Matthew Liddell Grainger.

Athlete of the week: Diego Riveroll Dodero
Diego Riveroll had never played squash before this year, and consequently started the year at #10 on the squash ladder. Although his coaches saw a lot of potential in him, even they were surprised at how quickly he improved, rising all the way to 4th in the first month of the season, and being the only Spartan to win all of his games at the recent BCS tournament. Only in Grade 8, the future is bright for this week’s co-Athlete of the Week. Congratulations, Diego!

The squash competitive team had their second meeting at BCS on January 15. Just like the first meeting, they offered a strong performance until the very last game. They finished one game short (14 to 13) but, in the end, we all had a very positive experience. Once again, our young rookie players were impressive against BCS veterans. Next meeting: January 22 @ Stanstead.
